On the 18th of December 1990 Major General Lucky Wijayaratne, Police Superintendent Richard Wijesekara, Corporal Shanthakumara, Corporal Anilkumara, Lance Corporal Premathilake, Lance Corporal Kumarasinghe, Lance Corporal Muthukumara and Lance Corporal Vipulananda were killed when the vehicle they were travelling in was hit by a LTTE land mine. They were returning from a refugee camp near Horowupatana in Tricomalee, where they had met with refugees to ask them to return to their villages as the LTTE had been driven out and could no longer harass them.

With the death of Major General Lucky Wijayaratne Sri Lanka lost one of its finest officers. In addition to numerous outstanding achievements during his military career, he is also credited with driving out the LTTE terrorists into the jungle fringes at the height of their strength and bringing normalcy back to the Trincomalee district. He lived and died by the words:

Ask not what your country can do for you, but what you can do for your country.

❧ May Major General Lucky Wijayaratne attain the lasting peace of Nibbana! ❧
